Following the announcement of the closure of West Wycombe Library by Buckinghamshire County Council, the West Wycombe Library Action Group was set up with the intention of running and developing the library in the village. After a lot of hard work, the group's business plan was accepted by the County Council in October 2006.
The library is now open for business, run by trained volunteers who seek to offer a professional and friendly service.
It is hoped to run various activities in the library, and a coffee shop as well during the warmer months.
History of the building
The library sits firmly in the centre of West Wycombe village. It dates from the late 17th century and was used as a wheelwright's before becoming the village library in the 1940s.
It is a picturesque building, made of local brick with flint infilling. Inside it features exposed roof beams and an open fire, which is occasionally used.
The photo shows the building in use as a wheelwright's, with the blacksmith next door (now Troutt's butchers).
Volunteers needed
The library is staffed by volunteers trained in library procedures. We are always in need of more people. If you are able to give any time, please contact the library.
In addition, we need people to help us with fund-raising. Again, please contact us if you can help in any way.
